The Saints in New Orleans are still metering their options for returning, and for good reason. With a potential suspension handed to RB star Alvin Camara looming, black and gold will have a huge gap to fill offensively. Although Kamara received no comment, Mickey Loomis and Dennis Allen continued to do their homework on potential additions to the Saints’ Room running.
A few days after the 2022 NFL Draft, the Saints hosted former first-round pick Sonny Michelle for the visit. Michelle, a player familiar with common background duties in his NFL and collegiate career, would have been a massive fit in New Orleans. However, he signed a one-year deal to join the Miami Dolphins.
However, there are still many viable options in free agency if New Orleans Saints choose to go this route. Some of them are NFL veterans, others are familiar faces, and some are looking for their second wind in the NFL.
Wayne Gallman, 27
Wayne Gallman was drafted into the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the New York Giants after the National Championship winning season in Clemson. His best season came in 2020 when he was replacing injured Saquon Barkley. The versatile quarterback’s 796 sparring yards and seven touchdowns was a start for the Giants.
Unfortunately for Gallman, he hasn’t been able to hold onto a franchise since 2020, playing for the 49ers, Falcons and Vikings. It looks like the former All-ACC’s run-back has left some gas in his tank and he’s looking for his second chance in the NFL. With the ability to play a pivotal role in the area’s rushing schemes and strong hands off the field, New Orleans could be a golden ticket back into the league for Gallman..
Daryl Williams, 27
New Orleans can bring in a former LSU Tiger and Louisiana with Daryl Williams. The 27-year-old was in New Orleans this week, posting a photo to his Instagram story about the Superdome. Williams has been a huge part of the Kansas City Chiefs’ recent success in his NFL career, including their best season so far in 2021.
With injuries to Clyde Edwards-Helair, Williams was the Chiefs’ number one, totaling 1,010 yards with eight touchdowns in 2021. The 2018 UDFA found a role in the NFL’s involvement on the field and would be an instant plug-and-play as well as room Saints running wallpaper.

Williams can be a one-year rental in New Orleans with reliable hands and deceptive speed. Maybe even fellow Alvin Kamara to run for years to come.
David Johnson, 30 years old
It’s hard to forget David Johnson’s 2,000-yard brawl season in 2016. Many thought it was a campaign focused on the next superstar to make a comeback in the league. However, Johnson never lived up to the hype, and One Year Wonders is still looking to show he has a little magic left.
Over the past two seasons, Johnson has served in the backyard division in Houston while totaling 1,458 yards during his time in Texas. The Northern Iowa producer will likely be looking at his final NFL contract or two, but he could provide leadership, experience and explosive play here and there for an NFL franchise. For New Orleans, a deal with Johnson likely won’t trump one season, but could serve as a strong placeholder if Camara is running out of time.
