Other automakers, such as VLF, Connaught and Qvale no longer exist, but their cars can still be found on collections, obscure dealerships and auction sites. Most of these cars use engines borrowed from the largest manufacturers – it is too expensive to develop the engine – while modifying existing engines is economical and allows the model to cost less to buy.

While some automakers, like Rimac, make it big — catching the auto giant’s eye — others simply lack the expertise to be sustainable, especially when a car costs more than a house. With that said, here are 10 of the strangest performance cars you may not have heard of.

10 770- Abd al-Rahman Ali Muhammad

The Bass 770 is a luxury muscle car made by Equus, the American muscle car manufacturer. It has been on sale since 2014. The test version of the car was equipped with a 5.0-liter V8, however, it was upgraded to a supercharged. LS9 6.2L V8, producing 640 horsepower and 605 pound-feet of torque.

The Bass 770 is a modern vehicle, with design inspired by classic American muscle cars of the past – most notably the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Charger and Challenger, Plymouth Barracuda, Pontiac GTO, and AMC Marlin. All that performance and style comes at a price, namely $534,000. It is nice looking though.

9 VLF power 1

The VLF Force 1 was a super sports/powerful vehicle built by VLF Automotive – a company founded by former CEOs of the largest American manufacturers. The Power 1 was based on the latest generation Dodge Viper and included a heavily modified 8.4-liter naturally aspirated version snake V10 engine, which produces 745 horsepower and 638 pound-feet of torque.

The Force 1 was only built in 2016 and was limited to 50 units. Interestingly enough, the car was standard with a six-speed manual transmission but had the option of a 6-speed automatic transmission. The car was designed by Henrik Fisker and basically made the already aggressive Snake even more so.

8 Fisker Tramonto

The Fisker Tramonto was a coach-built sports car/grand tourer that used a Mercedes-Benz SL as its base. The Tramonto was available with a V8 or V12 and 150 units were planned. Unfortunately, only 15 cars were ever built and the last car (#15/15) had a V12 engine.

The V8 version had a top speed of 202 mph, while the V12 could hit 205. This was mostly thanks to the upgraded engine, which produced 700 horsepower and 1,000 pound-feet of torque. The 0-60 time was 3.2 seconds. The Tramonto kept the SL’s standard safety systems intact but the design and hand-stitched interior were modified.

7 Venturi Atlantique 300 Biturbo

Venturi was a small car manufacturer in France that only produced the Atlantique sports car. It was fitted with a set of Peugeot/Citroen/Renault V6s, two of which were turbocharged. The Atlantique 300 Biturbo was one of the most powerful models and featured a twin-turbo version from Renault ESL V6.

Power in the Biturbo was 306 hp and 291 lb-ft of torque, putting it in the same class as the Lotus Esprit V8. The 300 Biturbo has a top speed of 171 mph and a 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds. The Atlantique 300 Biturbo was the last car built by Venturi to be considered French, with the company moving to Monaco once production was complete.


6 Mazanti Evantra

The Mazzanti Evantra is a supercar with very limited operation – five units per year – and is built in Pontedera, Italy. The base model is the Evantra 771, which features a 7.0-liter capacity with a naturally aspirated system LS7 V8 engine, making 771 horsepower and 642 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a 7-speed sequential transmission.

The Evantra has some aggressive styling, with more vents and wings than a fighter jet. Interiors are custom made for each client. The Evantra 771 is capable of achieving a top speed of 209 mph, completing a 0-60 mph time of 3 seconds.

5 Veritas RS III

The Veritas RS III was the first and only car produced by the German automaker in nearly 50 years. The RS III was revealed in 2001 as a track-focused speed car that was supposed to be powered by a BMW 6.0-liter V12, but over the course of several years and many revisions later, it was fitted with a BMW 5.0-liter V10 engine.

The car produced 507 hp and had some interesting styling. Veritas RS III was shown on the British maximum speed Revised by Richard Hammond. The vehicle is built in a racing-friendly design, featuring the classic 1 + 1 seat arrangement.

4 TVR Tuscan T440R

The Tuscan TVR is a really weird car – the overall design, the weird way of opening the doors, questionable handling. Then TVR advanced and made a crazier version, called the T440R. The 4.0-liter engine in a row – 6 was increased to 4.2 liters, and the engine produced 440 hp instead of the regular 400 hp.

The T440R was able to accelerate to 60 mph in 4 seconds and had a top speed of 215 mph. To handle the extra power, the chassis has been completely redesigned, along with the suspension and brakes. The T440R also had a restyled exterior, which was more aerodynamic than the regular Tuscan. It was also one of the few carbon fiber cars for sale when it was revealed.

3 Qvale Mangusta

The Qvale Mangusta was the more modern version of the original De Tomaso Mangusta in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It was basically a Ford Mustang with an Italian body, and it had most of the same parts – including the 4.6-liter V8 and transmission.

The Mangusta was the only Qvale model ever produced and was only for sale between 1999 and 2002. The Mangusta was eventually redesigned into the MG XPower SV – which was as successful as the Mangusta.

2 MG XPower SV

The MG XPower SV was a car made up of parts and pieces from another car – made up of parts and pieces. The XPower SV featured parts from the Qvale Mangusta, which in turn used many of the parts found on the Ford Mustang. The XPower SV was equipped with a 4.6-liter Ford V8, while the XPower SV-R had a 5.0-liter Ford V8.

The base model SV produced 320 horsepower and 302 pound-feet of torque, mated to a 4-speed automatic gearbox. The car is said to be able to hit 165 mph, with a 0-60 mph time of just 5.3 seconds. The MG was folded by the time the XPower SV reached production, selling just nine units—one of which went to Rowan Atkinson.


1 Connaught Type-D

Connaught Engineering was responsible for three race cars that competed in the 1950s. The company was revived as the Connaught Motor Company in 2004 and produced the Type-D – a small, rear-wheel drive sports car. The D-type gig piece was its engine, a narrow, 22-degree V10, displacing just 2.0 liters.

The Type-D produced around 300 horsepower and was mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, allowing the car to sprint at 170 mph. The entire vehicle is made of composite materials, built on a stainless steel chassis, and clad in aluminum panels. The Connaught Type-D was a truly amazing little sports car with a very unique engine.
